Koi are simply, colored Carp. Carp existed pretty much everywhere in the world, but colored Carp with many color variations originated in the 1800’s in Japan. Koi as we know them today were cultivated in Japan over many years. There are many, many varieties and color combinations, with many different names. The most popular type is Gosanke. Gosanke is comprised of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties. Japanese breeders have much knowledge and experience when it comes to breeding Koi.

I know from personal experience that Koi can be friendly, exhibit individual behaviors, and unique personalities.  My daughter hand feeds them regularly.  They make awsome pets that require little effort.  Simple hand dug ponds, with aeration, and filtration work very well.
